Relations With Other Types

Top 10s about anything from gaming to lifestyle!
  • They’re strong against the Bug type because it’s easy to burn an insect, and it’s difficult for it to survive.
  • They’re strong against the Grass type because fire consumes plants easily, and even though the fire is extinguished, the plants are damaged heavily.
  • They’re strong against the Ice type because fire melts ice.
  • They’re strong against the Steel type because metal conducts heat, and fire is used to melt down metals.
  • They’re weak against the Ground type because if sand, dirt, or mud is thrown over a fire, the fire dies out.
  • They’re weak against the Rock type because fire is easily extinguished if rocks are thrown over it, and because rocks can withstand extreme heat from the fire.
  • They’re weak against the Water type because water extinguishes it.
  • They resist the Fairy type because traditionally, fairies live in forests, and fire destroys the forests. Fire, along with steel, is also considered manmade, which is anathema to fairies. Interestingly, the Fairy type isn’t weak to it.
  • The Dragon type resists them because, in ancient legends, dragons weren’t affected by nature’s principal forces . In addition, most dragons in legends breathe fire.
  • They resist themselves because trying to fight a fire with fire would increase the flame.

Rayquaza Is The Only Pokmon Capable Of Containing Groudon & Kyogre

Rayquaza, the Sky High Pokémon, is universally recognized as one of the strongest and most devastating Flying-type Pokémon in the anime. With a dual typing of Flying and Dragon, its offensive range can feature physical and special attacks, even calling on the elements to fuel its power at times.

In the X & Y series, Rayquaza is powerful enough to not only defeat strong trainers, Alain and Steven, but to also stop the mighty Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre from fighting and thus the inevitable destruction and devastation that would come with such a battle.

Pokemon Go Type Chart: Strengths Effectiveness Weaknesses And Resistances Explained

In Pokemon Go, Every type of Pokemon has four different relationships with other types any trainer should be aware of. That is:

  • Strong Against: represented on our type chart as Strong Vs, attacks from the listed type against the type listed here will deal additional damage to your opponent. This is ‘Super Effective’.
  • Weak Against: represented here as Weak Vs, attacks from the listed type against these types will do less damage to the enemy. This is ‘Not very effective…’
  • Resistance: listed as resist, taking attacks from this type will do much less damage to you.
  • Vulnerable: your type’s weaknesses. Attacks of these types will deal more damage – watch out!

So, for instance, Offensively a Ground-type Pokemon/move is Strong against Poison, Rock, Steel, Fire and Electric types, dealing double damage to them. It only does 50% damage against Flying, Bug and Grass Pokemon. Defensively, that same Ground-type Pokemon will take reduced damage from Poison, Rock and Electric Pokemon but also take double damage from Water, Grass and Ice – which is vulnerable to.

With that explained, let’s get into the Pokemon Go type chart in full.

No Concept Of Immunities/no Effect

Every attack in Pokémon GO damages an opposing monster in the mainline games, a small number of type matchups actually result in no damage i.e. immunity, usually with the message X has no effect. These matchups are:

  • Normal and Fighting immune to Ghost
  • Flying immune to Ground
  • Ghost immune to Normal and Fighting
  • Fairy immune to Dragon

These special cases still exist in Pokémon GO, however, they do around a third normal damagerather than doing no damage at all. In our type chart, these type immunities are bolded and placed in square brackets. REMEMBER – in the mainline games like Pokémon Sword and Shield, these attacks will have no effect whatsoever!

Talonflame Brings The Fire From Above

Pokemon Sacred Gold – Dual Type Challenge #1 – Fire/Flying

In the X & Y series, Talonflame is one of three Flying-types on Ash’s team during his Kalos journeys. However, for the first time in the series, Ash’s bird Pokémon has a vitally important second typing to go with its Flying moves and characteristics: Fire. In Kalos, Ash doesn’t get the Fire-type starter, which means he has to cover this in the form of another Pokémon, which is where Talonflame comes in.

Talonflame’s versatility and well-balanced move-set make it a valuable and important member of Ash’s team, leading him to many a victory. Talonflame is another important piece that makes up arguably Ash’s best team in the entire series.

The Legendary Birds Are As Dangerous As They Are Majestic

Zapdos, Articuno, and Moltres, the Legendary birds, are seen together in the movie The Power Of One, but each of them equally makes their own appearances in the anime. In these instances, their contradicting grace and anger are there for all to see, sometimes even evolving into conflict, normally involving Team Rocket in some way. The three of them are part Flying-type, beings birds, but they each differ in their second type: Electric, Ice, and Fire respectively.

They are all relatively equal in general strength, power, and other base stats, suggesting they should hold the same rank when considering the best Flying-type Pokémon from the anime.

Ash’s Staraptor Is A Spirited Combatant

Ash has always been a fan of using Flying-type bird Pokémon that are native to the current region that he is exploring, with the only exception to this being in Galar during Pokémon Journeys, with him having a Sirfetch’d which, despite being a bird, is not a Flying-type.

Targets weighing440.9 lbs. or more cannot be lifted by Sky Drop, causing the move to fail. Once the target has been lifted, its weight can no longer affect the success of that usage of Sky Dropeven if a lifted target becomes heavier than the threshold, it will not cause Sky Drop to fail.

If Gravity is used during the semi-invulnerable turn of Sky Drop, the move will be cancelled and both Pokémon will be brought down.

Both the user and the target can now be hit by Thousand Arrows during the semi-invulnerable turn of Sky Drop.

While a Pokémon currently being lifted by Sky Drop can freely select any of its moves at the start of the turn, it does not have the option to Mega Evolve or Ultra Burst even if it otherwise would be able to.

The Abilities Wimp Out and Emergency Exit will not trigger if the Pokémon is brought below half HP during the semi-invulnerable turn of Sky Drop.

Sky Drop can also be used as part of a Contest Spectacular combination with the user gaining an extra three appeal points if any of the moves Entrainment, Hold Hands or Play Nice was used in the prior turn.

Pokmon Go Types Strengths And Weakness

Pokémon also has its own set of weaknesses and strengths. For example, bug-type Pokémon are weak against fire-, flying-, and rock-type moves. Bug-type moves are strong against dark-, grass-, and psychic-type moves. Fire-, flying-, and rock-type moves will do double damage against a bug-type, like Caterpie.

Some Pokémon have two types, which means they can have a doubled weakness or have their strength and weaknesses cancel out to just take normal damage. Rayquaza, a dragon- and flying-type, takes four times the damage from ice-type moves. On the flip side, Shuckle, a rock- and bug-type, takes normal damage from fire-type moves, since rock-type is strong against fire-type.

Strengths and weaknesses also arent necessarily just opposites of each other. Though fire-type move deal less damage to water-type Pokémon and water-type moves do doubled damage against fire-type Pokémon, this isnt the case with every type. For example, fighting-type moves are strong against normal-types, but normal-types just do regular damage against fighting-types, rather than do reduced damage.

Knowing what Pokémons strengths and weaknesses are is an important aspect of raiding and battling. To do the most damage you can, you should make sure that your Pokémons moves are strong against what its battling.

Catch The Best Flying

Theres no denying that Flying-type Pokémon are one of the most powerful and most reliable companions in Pokémon Go. Since most of them are dual types, theyre very versatile, and you can make a team thats strong enough out of just Flying-type Pokémon.

That said, they arent the easiest pocket creatures to catch youll have to do a lot of walking and searching before you can come across one of them. Plus, not all of them are found in the Wild. Some can only be caught after youve defeated them in five-star Raid Battles, which can be tricky to win. But dont be discouraged! With enough experience and some luck, its totally possible to get hold of Flying-type Pokémon. And once you do, youll find that going through all that fuss just to get one is completely worth it.

Dragonite Is The Ace Of Many An Expert Dragon

Several different Dragonite are featured throughout the entire Pokémon series, but there are four strong trainers that utilize this incredibly powerful Dragon and Flying-type Pokémon. Drake had a strong team when he faced Ash at the Orange League, being undefeated beforehand, and because of how strong his Dragonite was, he arguably should have defeated Ash.

Lance and Iris also own a Dragonite, with them both possessing their own unique personality traits which brings further intrigue to the species as a whole. Ash currently has a Dragonite on his team in Pokémon Journeys, and despite it loving to hug everything and everyone, it has slowly grown to embrace a more ruthless and decisive side of battling.

Swellow Was A Crucial Part Of Ash’s Hoenn Team

Swellow was Ash’s only Flying-type Pokémon from the Hoenn region and was arguably one of the best acquisitions over the course of the Ruby & Sapphire series. It carried Ash’s team on occasion and grew close enough with Ash that he trusted it to take a Thunder from Pikachu during a Gym battle against Tate & Liza, thus giving them Thunder Armor and the boost they needed to push on and emerge victoriously.

Ash’s Swellow also faced off against Winona’s Swellow in an intense Gym battle at Fortree City, in what was a perfect showcase for this bird Pokémon’s speed, agility, and occasionally devastating offense.

Tips On How To Remember Pokmon Types

For anyone who has invested years of play into this series, the type system becomes second nature. While in time your memory too will retain most of, if not the full set of relationships it is worth learning the logical relationships that do exist.

The classic example taught at the beginning of every Pokémon game is that fire is super effective against grass, which is in turn super effective against water, which is in turn super effective against fire. This is easy enough to follow fire burns grass, grass thrives with water, water puts out fire but finding similar relationships in the other 18 types is will help you remember the system.

Here are some other ideas to get you started:

  • Rocks effectiveness against flying is reminiscent of the phrase kill two birds with one stone
  • Similarly, psychic is effective against fighting because brains are better than brawn but psychic is vulnerable to dark and ghost because the mind cannot cope with the unknown and supernatural
  • Ground types are immune to electric attacks because being grounded is an important principle in electric circuits but ground can be swept away be water, cracked by ice and exploited by grass.

With the addition of new types over the years, the Pokémon type system has got a little more complicated than Rock-Paper-Scissors, but once you’ve committed the above to memory , you’ll have no problem finding the right Pokémon for the right job.
