Game Theory: Pokemon – Why Pikachu is SHOCKINGLY Terrible! (Pokemon Sword and Shield)
Main article: Pika

Pikachu debuted in Wanted: Pikachu!, where it was stealing all the crops in a town. The townsfolk kept chasing him around, but end up getting shocked by him. Red arrives and captures him, ending the chaos. Although extremely disobedient at first, even prone to regularly electrocuting his owner, the two eventually got over this enmity, and this Pikachu, nicknamed “Pika”, became one of his most loyal and trusted fighters, being used in almost every major battle Red has had.

A Pikachu appeared as a silhouette when Green talks about Mew in The Jynx Jinx.

What Is The Most A Pokmon Card Has Sold For

The Blastoise is an ultra-rare Pokémon card that sold at auction for $360,000. One of only two such Pokémon cards in existence – making it extremely rare – this Blastoise suddenly became one of the most valuable Pokémon cards of all time after it sold at auction in January 2021 for a whopping $360,000 .

The Worst: It Shocks Everything

Shocking right? Well, not to anyone who has watched even an episode of the TV show. Pikachus an electric mouse. It’s going to electrocute everything in its path. Ashs Pikachu spent most of the episode electrocuting the poor kid over and over again. Anytime Pikachu is upset, Thundershock. If it doesnt like something, Discharge. Team Rocket mucking around? Thunderbolt. However, Pikachus behavior on the TV show isnt what earned it a spot on this list. The reason goes back to the Pokédex. More specifically, Pikachus dex entry from Ruby and Omega Ruby. Whenever Pikachu comes across something new, it blasts it with a jolt of electricity. If you come across a blackened berry, its evidence that this Pokémon mistook the intensity of its charge. Talk about destructive.

Best Moveset For Pikachu

Thanks to its well-rounded stats, there are many ways to use Pikachu in a competitive setting. However, its important to note that Pikachus stats will be significantly lower than its opponents unless it holds a Light Ball. This can reduce Pikachus utility at high levels since it prevents it from holding other useful items like berries or Z-Crystals.

Its also important to consider Pikachus Nature and Ability when preparing it for battle.

Pikachus Static ability allows it to Paralyze foes that make physical contact with it. Since the Paralysis condition reduces an affected Pokémons Speed and also prevents it from getting some attacks off, it is especially useful against Pikachus foes, since Pikachu typically is a sweeper with high Speed and low Defense and Special Defense.

The best natures for Pikachu will boost its Speed, Attack, or Special Attack, and will hinder its Defense or Special Defense.

The following moveset, combined with a Light Ball and good IVs, good EVs, a good Nature, and the right Ability, can make Pikachu a formidable Special Sweeper.

Thick Defense and Crowd Control

Pikachu can dish out stuns to the enemy but once it gets a taste of its own medicine, the tables get turned. If debuffed, Pikachu is rendered useless as the enemy team chip away at its health. Thick Defenders also pose a problem as they block the path to the squishier Pokemon.

The Worst: The Gym Battle Situation

A lot of people like to argue that the different starters offer a different difficulty curve. Bulbasaur gave you easy mode since he basically tore through the first three gyms with zero effort. Squirtle was the nice midway point as he helped a lot for the first gym, but was fairly useless for the second and third gym. Charmander set the game to hard mode because of how much difficulty he had in the first two gyms and how slow he was to power up. However, if Charmander was hard mode, then Pikachu was brutal or extreme. No matter what the anime might think, Pikachu was the absolute worst thing to bring to the first gym. Brocks ground/rock type Pokémon destroyed it. Pikachu made up for its total incompetence in Mistys water type gym, but went right back to being useless in Lt. Surges electric type gym. Plus, in the later game, Pikachu became useless again for the 8th gym and the Elite Four. Both a ton of ground and rock type Pokémon.

The Worst: Anyone Can Do It Better

Anything Pikachu can do, other Pokémon can do better. A lot better. Pikachu isnt exactly the worst electric type in the world, but it is pretty far on the bottom. If you just look at Pikachus base stats, it is one of the lowest around. Heck, even the Pikachu clones outclass Pikachu in terms of raw stats. Most Pikachu clones hover around 400 for their base stats compared to Pikachus measly 309 . In fact, if you have a Thunderstone, you might as well use it on an Eevee since Jolteon outpaces even Raichu. Although players have access to Pikachu a lot earlier in Pokémon Red or Blue, Eevee is not far behind. You could argue that Jolteon is a second evolution so it cant be compared, but all you have to do is look at Voltorb. With a base stat of 330 and an all around better-learned move set, Voltorb is clearly superior to Pikachu.

Utilize Thunderstorm’s Low Recharge Rate TCG XY Promo

Thunderstorm’s recharged rate improved drastically thanks to the Update, allowing you to use it more freely and frequently. You can further improve Thunderstorm’s recharge rate by equipping Energy Amplifier with the bonus of dealing more damage for a short duration after using it.

Wait for Enemy UNITE Moves to Finish and Cleanup

Though it is tempting to initiate fights with Pikachu’s Thunderstorm, it is much better to use it as a clean-up tool.

When used to initiate, enemy teams can easily mitigate the tick damage by stacking shields using Buddy Barrier, which would waste the damage potential of your Thunderstorm.

Cleaning up a depleted enemy team to secure kills would be a better option. On the contrary, if your team lost the clash then you can use Thunderstorm to escape.

Why Is Pikachus Tail Different

Pokémon Go Gender Differences Update: Female Pikachu Are Appearing In The Wild. Pokémon Go was updated to version 0.53, which changed how the mobile game tracked distance and accounted for GPS drift. Female Pikachu have a heart shape at the end of their tails. Male Pikachu have the normal lightning bolt tail.

The Worst: Smash Bros Woes

It is bad enough that Pikachu is bad in the mainline games. It is unforgivable that Pikachu sucks in Pokémon Yellow. However, Pikachu cant even find a way to be good in the side games. Specifically, in the Super Smash Bros. games. Granted, Pikachu was one of the best fighters in the original game. However, after that, Pikachu was severely nerfed. Only new players or stubborn players use it. Barely anyone in the professional circuit uses Pikachu and no one has won a grand tournament as Pikachu. Even the worlds best Pikachu player couldnt pull it off. Pikachu shows up in other games like Pokémon Stadium, but its presence is so insignificant it might as well not be there. The same goes for most of the other Pokémon spin-off titles. Even the Pokémon Trading Card Game couldnt make Pikachu good despite having hundreds of different versions.

The Worst: 100000 Volts

Pikachus signature move is Thunderbolt. The Japanese name for Thunderbolt is 100,000 volts. Thats a ton! Especially when you consider that it came out of the little red cheeks of a 14 mouse. For the record, electric eels can produce electrical shocks as high as 860 volts. Thats gotta hurt, but its not actually deadly. In fact, you can buy 10,000 volt tasers or 3.5 million volt stun guns. Thats enough to paralyze you and probably stings pretty bad. When it comes to electricity, high voltage isnt what matters. Amplitude is where its at. The higher the amp, the worse off youre gonna be. You only need 0.1 amps to kill someone. Pikachu striking a human with 100,000 volts is equal to 1amp. That isnt even its strongest electric attack. While Pikachu might suck in the games, its deadly to its trainer. Sorry, Ash, youre not walking this one off.

The Worst: Starter Stats

Game Theory: What Level is Ash’s Pikachu? (Pokemon)

One of the reasons why the first generation of Pokémon was unique was because it was the only mainline game with four possible starters. Granted, none of the games ever offered all four, but it still counts. Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue all offered a choice between Charmander, Bulbasaur, or Squirtle. However, Pokémon Yellow allowed players to start off with Pikachu. Pokémon Yellow followed the plot of the show and your companion was Ashs Pikachu. This was really exciting for 90s kids. At least, until they realized how much Pikachu sucked.

Pikachus stats were the worst, especially in comparison to the other starters. Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur all have a total base stat count of 309, 314, and 318 respectively. Pikachu had a measly 300 stat total until gen 6. The only edge it had over the other starters was its speed. That didnt change when Nintendo increased Pikachus stat total to 320. Pikachu has a slight edge over the others in Attack now, but that is by a measly two points. Even an extra 20 points couldnt save Pikachu. In fact, no other starter has stats as bad as Pikachus.

The Worst: What Are His Good Abilities

Pikachu naturally learns two moves at level 1. Depending on the generation it would get Thundershock and Growl or Thundershock and Tail Whip. Out of those two, only Thundershock can actually deal any damage. However, Pikachu doesnt learn another damage dealing attack until at least level 10 although in some games that is as high as level 16. So what is the move that you have to wait so long for? Why, the astounding Quick Attack. A great move with a whopping 40 power . Even after that, you still have to wait anywhere between 5 to 20 levels before Pikachu learns another damaging move. Most of these attacks fall within the 20 to 65 power range. A good chunk of them have relatively low accuracy. All of the other gen 1 starters learn at least two damage dealing attacks before level 10.
